“Identity” – a word that emerged relatively recently, but it now accounts for all too many aspects of life. Civilization has given man great freedoms, thereby answering the question “Who am I” no longer seems to be self-evident. The “I” frequently presents itself as an obscure composition to the modern person, as a complex construct or perhaps as fate’s conceit, impossible to immediately unravel. Why do some artists feel comfortable within the limits of their national tradition, whereas others find themselves compelled to travel between cultures as a means to create? How does one feel, “dispatched” to journey by extraneous forces? There is further an identity of age, of genre, of history – what are we to do with our bodies, with our already established experiences, with our cultural archetypes? It remains unlikely that participants and viewers will find comprehensive answers to these fundamental questions in the few short days the “Class” Festival will last. Rather than giving answers, we must all learn to ask the right questions of ourselves – by engaging with artists and their work.
